Bagru Printing

One of the oldest conventional textile arts in Bagru, a region of the Indian state of Rajasthan, Bagru printing is characterizable by bright and bold patterns. This hand-block printing technique uses naturally dyed fabric and finely carved wooden blocks. Their process encompasses bold geometric designs, intricated floral patterns, earthy tones, and rich textures. These dyes are usually derived from plants, as in indigo and turmeric, lending an organic and therefore highly credible appeal to such fabrics. This ancient craft testifies not only to the dexterity and creativity of the craftsmen involved but brings to the fore also the rich cultural tradition of Rajasthan. It is such an embodiment of this classic art combined with creativity that has made the Bagru prints timeless in contemporary and traditional garments alike.
